The phosphonopyruvate decarboxylase from Bacteroides fragilis.

The Bacteroides fragilis capsular polysaccharide complex is the major virulence factor for abscess formation in human hosts. Polysaccharide B of this complex contains a 2-aminoethylphosphonate functional group. This functional group is synthesized in three steps, one of which is catalyzed by phosphonopyruvate decarboxylase. In this paper, we report the cloning and overexpression of the B. fragi...

Nutritional features of Bacteroides fragilis subsp. fragilis.

Studies of three reference strains of Bacteroides fragilis subsp. fragilis showed that they grow well in a minimal defined medium containing glucose, hemin, vitamin B(12), minerals, bicarbonate-carbon dioxide buffer, NH(4)Cl, and sulfide. The vitamin B(12) requirement of 0.1 ng/ml was replaced with 7.5 mug of methionine. Cysteine or sulfide was an excellent source of sulfur, thioglycolate was a...

Bacteroides fragilis meningitis.

A fatal case of pyogenic meningitis due to Bacteroides fragilis in a 6-year-old boy is reported. The need for processing cerebrospinal fluid of patients with underlying conditions such as chronic otitis media for recovery of both aerobes and anaerobes is discussed.

Cephalosporinase activity in Bacteroides fragilis.

Cephalosporinase activity was demonstrated in all of 10 strains of Bacteroides fragilis investigated. Low rates of hydrolysis of cephalosporins (0.25 to 3.5 mumol of cephaloridine per h per 10(9) cells) were found, but no activity against penicillin substrates was detected. In two strains the cephalosporinase activity was increased 40-and 80-fold by growing cells in the presence of penicillin. ...

Characterization of cephalosporinases from Bacteroides fragilis, Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron and Bacteroides vulgatus.

The susceptibility of 80 Bacteroides fragilis group strains isolated from clinical specimens to beta-lactam antibiotics was investigated by agar dilution method. Twenty strains showed high resistance to the antibiotics. The resistance level of the isolates to cephaloridine was related to the amount of beta-lactamase activity (cephalosporinase; CSase) produced. B. fragilis GN-11477, B. thetaiota...
